Star Parties Are Back!
The long national health emergency seems to be over, temperate weather has returned to Borrego Springs, and we are still blanketed by the only International Dark Sky in California. Conditions are just perfect for the return of the Star Parties.
What Are Star Parties?
Star Parties with dining and dark skies are scheduled for January, February, and March at the Springs Moonlight Amphitheatre. Check the calendar for dates and details. Renowned astronomer Dennis Mammana leads the participants through a slide show, Star Talk, and telescope viewing after a light dinner.
There is a different theme for every one of the Star Parties. You’ll discover something new and fascinating at each presentation. March, for example, is all about Desert Moon Dreams. The Moon Goddess has been known by many names – Diana, Aphrodite, Isis, and Levanah – and has inspired generations of poets, singers, and artists all over the world.
Sign up for one or more of the Star Parties at the office. The cost is only $25 per person to discover more about the heavens than you ever thought possible.
Upcoming Heavenly Events

- January 30 – Mercury at the Greatest Western Elongation. This is the best time to see brightly glowing Mercury because it will be low in the eastern sky, just before sunrise.
- February 5 – Full Moon. Early Native Americans knew this full moon as the Snow Moon because the heaviest snowfall often occurred at this time of the year. Since snows made hunting difficult, some tribes referred to this full moon as the Hunger Moon.
- March 20 – Vernal Equinox. The sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness throughout the world. In the Northern Hemisphere, we know this date as the first day of Spring.
